From The Neck Down: Physical Comedy Workshop for Standup Comedians
I’m teaching my first physical comedy workshop in Spain!
I’m teaching at the Comedy Clubhouse, a venue that has in a very short time become the premier center for English language comedy and improv in Barcelona. Located in the historic Born district, they have open mics and shows every day of the week. I’ve performed there a couple of times since I moved to Barcelona.
They’ve recently started an education program, and have asked me to teach a class for improvisors and standup comedians on physical comedy. I am titling it From The Neck Down.
Many comedians are funny from the neck up, but this class will help them add the rest of the body. It’s not what you say, it’s how you say it, and we’ll explore concepts of rhythm, movement, isolation, counterpoint, and asymmetry. We’ll play some games, inhabit some characters, and in a short amount of time get some tools to use the body to augment verbal comedy.
I haven’t taught this specific class before, but I’ve taught all of the elements of it in various configurations over the last 20 years. I think it will be a lot of fun, and I hope you can join me for the workshop!
If you need to know a little about me, here’s my brief bio:
Adam Gertsacov is one of the most educated clowns in North America (barring certain elected officials) He’s performed in 37 states and 6 countries, and one of his shows has even been a question on Jeopardy! He’s worn many hats, including that of the Clown Laureate of Greenbelt Maryland, the director of an arts festival, and the impresario of a flea circus. He has taught many workshops in clowning, physical comedy, and improvisation over the last 25 years. He now lives in Barcelona.
